The awesome responsibilities that come with
the roles of
mother and father can be both joyous and intimidating.
Indeed, it not only takes a whole village to raise a child,
it
takes incredible patience; support from family, friends and
community; sound, reliable information, and enormous
amounts of love.
Although we can never be sure along the way that every
decision is a sensible one, our end goal for our children is
always the same ... for them to be healthy, safe,
competent and confident. Throughout the stages of their
growth, we hope that our guidance, our choices and our
loving assistance will help our sons and daughters to
become trustworthy and dependable people who are in tune with
their unique strengths and talents.
There is a wonderful little anecdote about the well-known American
composer, pianist and conductor, Leonard
Bernstein. According to the story, Bernstein's father was
criticized for not having given his talented son more
encouragement when he was a child. "How was I to know
he would grow up to be Leonard Bernstein"? the father
protested.
While it is certainly correct that we cannot know whom
they will grow up to be, it is also true that we ought to
provide all the encouragement they need to fulfill their
