How to Take Time to Read to Children
Your child will develop half of his or her ability to learn by age 4. To make the most of those years, you must expose your child early and consistently to reading. Otherwise, your child runs the risk of being behind classmates when he or she enters school.

Reading Aboud to Your Child
is well-know to be the most effective way to develop a lifelong love of books and reading.
prepares your child for the work that they will encounter at school.
broadens your child's reading interests and tastes.
forms a lifelong bond between you and your child.
remember to set aside time each day (even 10 minutes) to spend time reading with your child.
Learning to Listen
Before your child can learn to read, he or she must learn to listen. Use these tips to make the most of your daily reading time with your child.
Move your finger under the words as you read. It helps your child make the connection between words on the page and what you're saying.
Let your child turn the page. It makes your child feel important to take part in the process.
Act out the characters with your voice as you read. Remember, you're competing with television for your child's attention.
Use books with tapes. You can even make your own so your child can listen to your voice even when you don't have time to read.
Let your child see you reading . It reinforces the importance of reading and exposes your child to new kinds of reading materials.
Make visiting your local library a habit. The library has great books for you and your child to share together.
Remember, you don't have to teach your child how to read, just to want to read!
